Numata Center
The primary mission of the Numata Center for Buddhist Translation and Research
is to publish definitive English translations of the entire 100-volume
Sino-Japanese Buddhist canon, the Taisho Shinshu Daizokyo. The Numata Center,
located in Berkeley, California, works in close cooperation with the
Bukkyo Dendo Kyokai (BDK) (Society for the Promotion of Buddhism),
founded by the late Rev. Dr. Yehan
Numata.
A prominent industrialist and philanthropist, Rev. Dr. Numata
was perhaps the greatest patron of Buddhism in modern times. Following the
establishment of the BDK and the international success of its landmark
publication, The Teaching
of Buddha, Rev. Dr. Numata continued to work toward realizing his dream
of making the complete Buddhist canon available in English. In November 1984,
Rev. Dr. Numata established the Numata Center to undertake this major project,
the BDK Tripitaka Translation Series.
Under the direction of Rev. Seishin Yamashita, the Numata Center, located in
Berkeley, California, began the work of editing and publishing the
First Series of selected texts from the Taisho Tripitaka (see
Available Titles). The Numata Center is dedicated to realizing Rev. Dr.
Numata's vision of helping humanity through making the teachings of the Buddha
available to all.
